What is white noise?
White noise contains all audible frequencies at roughly equal power — the audio equivalent of white light, which mixes every color. Because there is as much energy in the high frequencies as the low, it sounds bright and hiss-like, similar to an untuned radio, a fan, or steady rain on a roof.
Our generator produces true white noise in real time, so it never repeats and stays perfectly consistent for as long as you play it.
Benefits of white noise
White noise excels at masking because its even spectrum overlaps with almost any intruding sound. When the background is filled evenly, sudden noises have less contrast to stand out against, so they are far less likely to wake you or break your concentration.
- Sleep: covers snoring, traffic, and hallway noise in homes, hotels, and dorms.
- Babies: mimics the constant whoosh of the womb and can soothe fussy newborns (see our safety guide).
- Focus & offices: masks conversations in open-plan spaces and cafés.
- Privacy: adds a layer of sound so nearby conversations are harder to overhear.
How to use the white noise player
Start playback and set the volume just high enough to cover the sounds bothering you. If the bright hiss feels harsh, pull the Tone slider down to soften the highs — or try pink or brown noise, which roll off the treble for a warmer feel. Add a Sleep Timer to fade the sound out automatically.
