Best noise colors for babies
The gentler, fuller colors work best for infants:
- White noise — most closely resembles the womb's whoosh; the classic choice.
- Pink noise — softer than white, balanced and natural.
- Brown noise — deep and gentle, echoing low womb sounds.
Baby safety: volume and distance
This matters more than the color. Keep any infant sound machine below about 50 decibels and place it well away from the crib — at least 2 metres (7 feet). Never put the device in or on the crib, and turn it down as low as still works.
- Keep volume around 50 dB or lower.
- Place the speaker at least 2 metres from the baby.
- Never place a phone or speaker inside the crib.
- Use a timer or switch it off once your baby is asleep.
